I was first attracted to watercolor through the door of calligraphy.
The two expressions seemed to go hand in hand. The more calligraphic styles
I learned, the more lay out and design I learned, the more I knew I needed
to learn watercolor.
The opportunity to learn watercolor came in 1985 through the local team
teachers, Viki Richardson and MaryJo Harding. I took their beginner class
in 1985, 1987, and 1989. Painting six weeks every other year certainly
did little to advance my ability as a watercolorist!
In 1990, I started taking watercolor workshops. The adolescent years of
any growth process are difficult. There is a lot of pulling and stretching...
a lot of whining too. Like an adolescent, I was testing new ideas and
new techniques; pushing against my limitations (whining a lot); failing
a lot and succeeding some. Each workshop was like a port-of-call, bringing
to me knowledge and technique. Out in the depths the "new stuff"
was tested and either thrown over board as useless, or applied like a
lifesaver.
Painting is a journey, and that journey has become the destination. There
is delight in the painting; adventure in the process; joy in the finished
work.
I am indebted to each instructor's contribution to my knowledge and growth,
to each patron who enjoys the finished work and especially to Abba Father,
who knit into me the desire to paint.
